Rare Wines: BULAS Very Old Port

BULAS - Very Old Port Wine

There’s a new addition to Casa Portuguesa’s Rare Wines Collection: BULAS Very Old Port.

At Quinta da Costa de Baixo, the producing force of Bulas Wines, there’s an old cellar and warehouse dating from 1840 that still keeps it’s original design.

That’s where amazing secrets are kept: aged casks with old – and very old – wine. “Very fine wine”, nurtured for generations, that is now for us to taste, as a generous treasure from the Douro tradition.

BULAS Very Old Port is one such secrets – an exceptional 100 plus years Tawny Port of which just 200 numbered bottles were recently made available.

Gold coloured with predominant dark green notes, this wine’s bouquet is complex and intense, delighting us with memories of toast, honey, caramel, dry fruit, damask, figs and orange.

On the mouth, it’s a rich, full bodied wine unveiling a range of exuberant, intense flavours, and with a long, very persistent finishing.

Gold coloured with dark green notes, a complex and intense bouquet, and with exuberant flavours that lead to a very persistent finishing, this unique, very old, wine is the latest, and certainly one of the most notable, additions to our Rare Wines Collection.

Portuguese wines did it again!

Amazing results for Portuguese wines at Mundus Vini Spring Tasting 2016.

CPWS Did it again

At the 18th edition of Mundus Vini, Portuguese wines accumulated a total of 258 awards, including 9 Grand Gold medals – the highest distinction of the competition.

Two of our most famous wine regions stand out. The Douro region took home 6 Grand Gold medals (5 awarded to fortified wines, and 1 to a still red wine), whereas the Alentejo region won 3 Grand Gold medals (all for still red wines).

Founded 15 years ago by Meininger Verlag publishing house, Mundus Vini has become one of the world’s most respected wine competitions. 5,000 wines from 149 wine growing regions around the world were tasted and judged this year by an international jury of 160 wine experts.

Mundus Vini Best Wines Spring Tasting 2016

In addition to the Grand Gold medals, Portugal won 144 Gold medals and 105 Silver medals in a competition that brought together more than 5,000 wines. Italy was the most awarded country (496 medals), followed by Spain (469 medals) and Portugal (258 medals).

Considering Portugal’s wine production is 1/6 of that of Italy and 1/5 of that of Spain, you can’t but marvel at such outstanding results.

Go Portugal!

“Andreas Larsson loved the dark juicy layers in this wine!”

“Andreas Larsson loved the dark juicy layers in this wine. Congratulations!”

Źródło: From Tasted 100% Blind’s Facebook page, 08-03-2016.

Showing a big potencial, Boas QuintasQuinta da Fonte do Ouro Touriga Nacional 2012 scored an impressive 90/100 by Andreas Larsson, who was crowned World’s Best Sommelier in 2007. This is how the wine was described during a blind tasting:

“Quite youthful colour here, still blue-purple core, slightly lighter towards the rim. Quite intense nose here. Ripe dark fruit. Still appearing youthful. Mostly based on the primary fruit; that consists of dark berries, plum, dark cherry. With some spicy notes of liquorice, anise seed. No noticeable oak so far. Very tight palate, not in a negative way, but a very dense palate I should say. It is still youthful, still a presence of tannin, but ripe tannin. With, really, layers of lush dark fruit. Hint of roasted oak, in the background. A lot of spiciness going on, on the finish, with clove, white pepper. The wine has a very good length as well and very nice acidity and freshness. The only thing is that this would need a few more years. I see a big potential in this one, well voila, due to the density, structure and length. It is still youthful and primary, but it is certainly a style that will develop much more complexity in the coming years.”
